Deakin University and Telangana Government Partner to Advance AI Innovation in India

Hyderabad: Deakin University from Australia has joined forces with the Government of Telangana to promote Artificial Intelligence (AI) innovation in India. This collaboration was formalized through a Letter of Intent with Telangana’s Department of Information Technology, Electronics and Communications (ITE&C). Their focus is to develop AI solutions that serve the public interest and support India's expanding digital economy.

Strengthening AI Collaboration Between Deakin University and Telangana

Deakin University, ranked within the top 1% globally, has a long-standing presence in India, working with academic, government, and industry partners for over 30 years. This new partnership leverages Deakin’s Applied Artificial Intelligence Initiative and Telangana’s plans to apply AI across sectors like healthcare, governance, education, and entrepreneurship.

Duddila Sridhar Babu, Telangana’s Minister for Information Technology, Electronics, Communications, and Industry, highlighted that this partnership is key for future governance and innovation. Telangana’s AI framework prioritizes skilling, data governance, and regulation to ensure ethical and inclusive technology use.

Professor Iain Martin, Vice Chancellor of Deakin University, emphasized the university’s dedication to providing Indian students with globally relevant education and fostering innovation through research collaborations. Professor Svetha Venkatesh, Co-Director of the Applied Artificial Intelligence Initiative, pointed out that this partnership positions India and Australia to deliver socially relevant, human-centered AI solutions.

Sanjay Kumar, IAS, Special Chief Secretary of the ITE&C Department, described AI as a tool for equitable growth. He noted that working with Deakin University will enhance Telangana’s capabilities to build AI solutions that meet global standards.
