Delhi partners with IIT Kanpur on AI air quality forecasting system
The Delhi government has signed an agreement with IIT Kanpur's AIRAWAT Research Foundation to build an artificial intelligence system that forecasts air pollution levels up to 72 hours in advance.
The system will use data analysis and machine learning to process information from low-cost sensors, mobile monitoring laboratories, and satellite data. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the initiative will improve pollution-control efforts and strengthen environmental monitoring across the city.
Delhi faces severe air pollution annually, particularly during winter months. The technology-driven monitoring network aims to give authorities earlier warning of pollution spikes, allowing for faster intervention.
What the system includes
- Low-cost sensor networks across the city
- Mobile monitoring laboratories for field data collection
- Satellite data integration for broader coverage
The agreement was signed between Delhi's environment department and the AIRAWAT Research Foundation. The research collaboration reflects a shift toward data-driven approaches for managing the capital's air quality challenges.
