Djibouti launches AI-in-education training to strengthen responsible use across schools

Djibouti has launched a training program to build responsible, practical use of artificial intelligence in education. The initiative was initiated by the Inspection General of National Education (IGEN) with the Ministry of National Education and Vocational Training (MENFOP) and the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie (OIF).

IGEN serves as the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD)'s regional policy framework for education in member countries, including Djibouti. As part of the 2025-2026 Continuing Education Plan, the program focuses on MENFOP's pedagogical inspectors-the group that influences supervision, teacher training, and policy implementation.

Training structure and schedule

The training is led by Houssein Ahmed Assowe from the University of Djibouti. It combines theory, case studies, and hands-on workshops that show how to integrate AI into classroom practice and administrative workflows.

Seven sessions are scheduled from October 2025 to January 2026. The program supports Djibouti's broader agenda to embed digital tools in the education system and improve governance across schools.

What educators can expect

  • Responsible use of AI in supervision and teacher training, with clear safeguards and ethical standards.
  • Classroom applications: lesson planning support, formative assessment, and targeted interventions.
  • Administrative applications: reporting, scheduling, and document generation to reduce workload.
  • Data-informed decision-making to support policy planning and instructional improvement.

Why this matters for school leaders and inspectors

Inspectors set expectations that ripple through classrooms. With the right guardrails, AI can streamline routine tasks, improve feedback cycles, and make room for more coaching time with teachers.

This program adds structure and shared standards, helping schools adopt AI with clarity and accountability.

Practical steps to get ready

  • Map your top 3-5 use cases (e.g., feedback on lesson plans, differentiated practice, report drafting).
  • Publish simple guidelines: permitted tools, data privacy rules, required human oversight, and escalation paths.
  • Run a small pilot with clear success criteria (quality, time saved, compliance) and share what works.
  • Provide short, job-embedded training for teachers and principals; collect examples and templates.
  • Review outcomes monthly and adjust tools, workflows, and policies based on evidence.

Timeline and stakeholders

  • Schedule: Seven sessions from October 2025 to January 2026.
  • Lead trainer: Houssein Ahmed Assowe, University of Djibouti.
  • Partners: IGEN (IGAD's regional education framework), MENFOP, and OIF.
