DMG Plans 50 MW AI Data Center at Christina Lake, Refocuses Away From Bitcoin Mining

DMG Blockchain Solutions is shifting its Christina Lake facility from Bitcoin mining to an AI-first data center. The company aims to partner with one or more operators to build a 50-megawatt critical IT load (CITL), liquid-cooled site capable of running the latest GPU clusters, targeting completion by the end of 2027.

Why this site? There are few locations in Canada with immediate access to renewable-powered transmission and practical distance to talent and customers. DMG wants to turn that constraint into an advantage and monetize the asset faster through partnerships instead of a slow, multi-year solo transition.

What Ops Leaders Should Pay Attention To

  • Utility and interconnect: 50 MW CITL requires confirmed capacity, redundancy, and clear timelines for upgrades and energization.
  • Thermal design: Liquid cooling changes rack density, floor loading, piping, containment, water treatment, and maintenance routines.
  • GPU readiness: Compatibility with current and near-term GPU generations, network fabric (200/400G+), and reference architectures.
  • Construction phasing: Phased MW blocks, commissioning windows, and staged partner onboarding to reduce idle capex.
  • Reliability and SLAs: Tier targets, failover design, and incident response plans sized for AI training workloads, not just inference.
  • Compliance and permits: Environmental, water use, and Indigenous engagement commitments documented and tracked.
  • Workforce: Upskilling from air-cooled crypto operations to liquid cooling, high-density racks, and GPU fleet lifecycle.
  • Cost model: TCO with liquid cooling, energy contracts, service models with partners, and clear chargeback or colo pricing.
  • Observability: DCIM, telemetry for thermals and energy, and capacity planning tied to workload forecasts.

Boardman, Oregon Asset Update

DMG still expects to close the purchase of a 27,600 sq. ft. building on 8 acres of leased land in Boardman, Oregon, with an option to lease an additional adjacent 10 acres. This gives optionality for future development while Christina Lake focuses on AI.

Bitcoin Mining: Guidance Withdrawn, Operations Continue

DMG is withdrawing its year-end hashrate target of 3 EH/s as it redirects effort to the AI build. November 2025 results: 22 BTC mined (vs. 23 in October), hashrate at 1.81 EH/s (vs. 1.75), and a BTC balance of 380 (vs. 359). Bitcoin mining remains part of DMG's broader digital asset strategy, but it will migrate away from Christina Lake.

Partnerships and Sovereign AI

DMG states it is building partnerships with Indigenous communities and continuing to work with the Canadian government on longer-term plans for sovereign AI. Expect partner announcements and program details to clarify responsibilities across construction, operations, and commercial models.

Key Milestones and Next Checks

  • Target: 50 MW CITL, liquid-cooled AI data center by end of 2027.
  • Near-term: Partner selection, interconnect confirmations, and detailed design packages (power distribution, liquid cooling, and network).
  • Mid-term: Procurement for GPUs, racks, cooling systems, and transformers; phased construction and commissioning plan.
  • Operations: Define SLAs, incident playbooks, parts inventory, training, and metrics (PUE, WUE, uptime).

Risks and Assumptions

DMG's plans include forward-looking statements. Execution depends on regulatory approvals, equipment availability, interconnect timing, capital access, and market conditions for both AI services and Bitcoin mining. BTC price and network difficulty can affect financials; supply chain and labor availability can affect schedules.
