Dubai’s Driverless Future: RTA and Pony.ai Set to Launch Trials in 2026

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has partnered with Pony.ai to begin pilot trials of autonomous vehicles within the emirate. These trials mark an important step toward introducing fully driverless services commercially by 2026.

Pony.ai, a Silicon Valley-based company with strong connections to China, recently introduced the seventh generation of its self-driving vehicles. Developed alongside automakers such as Toyota, GAC, and BAIC, these vehicles utilize advanced artificial intelligence combined with sensors, lidars, radars, and cameras. This technology enables precise navigation and safe performance across diverse road and weather conditions.

Strategic Partnership to Advance Smart Mobility

The collaboration was formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by Ahmed Hashim Bahrozyan, CEO of RTA’s Public Transport Agency, and Ann Shi, vice president of Strategy and Business Development at Pony.ai. Senior officials from both organizations witnessed the signing, highlighting the significance of this alliance.

Mattar Al Tayer, director general and chairman of RTA, emphasized the role this partnership plays in Dubai’s ambition to lead in smart and sustainable mobility. The city plans for 25% of all trips to be autonomous by 2030. Integrating autonomous taxis is expected to improve transport network connectivity, support first and last-mile travel, and enhance accessibility.

Al Tayer highlighted that autonomous mobility is becoming a practical reality. Dubai is actively creating the regulatory and infrastructure framework required for the safe deployment of self-driving vehicles, aiming to improve road safety and quality of life for residents and visitors alike.

Expanding Autonomous Technology Across the MENA Region

From Pony.ai’s perspective, this partnership represents a strategic expansion into the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) market. Dr Leo Wang, CFO of Pony.ai, noted that aligning with RTA’s forward-looking vision lays the foundation for smart transportation ecosystems across the region.

Pony.ai’s entry into Dubai builds on its successful deployments in other international cities. The upcoming pilot program will evaluate how these autonomous vehicles integrate with Dubai’s existing mobility system, setting the stage for a commercial launch in 2026.

What Executives Should Watch

  • Technology Integration: Autonomous vehicles combine AI with multiple sensor types, requiring strong collaboration between tech companies and regulators.
  • Regulatory Framework: Dubai’s approach to regulation and infrastructure development will be a model for other cities exploring autonomous mobility.
  • Market Potential: The MENA region is emerging as a key player for autonomous transport, offering new opportunities for innovation and investment.
  • Operational Impact: Autonomous taxis can enhance urban transport efficiency, reduce congestion, and improve accessibility.

Executives involved in strategic planning and technology adoption should monitor this partnership closely. Understanding how Dubai manages pilot integration and regulatory challenges will provide valuable insights for autonomous vehicle initiatives worldwide.
