Freelance AI Trainer for Writers - Remote, Flexible, Paid Weekly
If you write for a living and have sharp editorial instincts, there's a freelance role that fits your skillset. Outlier (operated by Scale AI) is hiring English-speaking writers to help train and refine AI systems. The listing references Essex, but the work is fully remote.
You'll get paid to craft prompts, review AI responses, and make judgment calls on clarity, usefulness, and reasoning. It's hands-on work that rewards clear thinking and clean writing.
What You'll Do
- Write from a real user perspective to produce natural, high-quality data that reflects how people actually use AI.
- Review, compare, and rank responses from large language models based on usefulness, clarity, and reasoning quality.
- Contribute to different projects depending on your interests, skills, and experience.
What We're Looking For
- Analytical judgment: Craft thoughtful prompts and evaluate nuanced responses with context and common sense.
- Strong written communication: Explain decisions clearly, give actionable feedback, and justify why one response is stronger than another.
- Care and precision: Follow guidelines, spot subtle differences, and keep outputs aligned with quality standards.
Nice to Have
- Background in literature, creative writing, history, philosophy, theology, or similar fields.
- Experience in writing or editorial roles: content strategy, technical writing, editing.
- Curiosity about AI systems, machine learning, or creative tech tools.
Pay & Logistics
- Base rate by location: US $16.07, GB £13.30, CA $20.50 CAD, AU $26.25 AUD, IE €14.60 EUR, NZ $26.00 NZD
- Bonuses: Additional pay based on project performance.
- Type: Freelance/1099 contract (not an internship).
- Location: 100% remote.
- Schedule: Flexible hours - you choose when and how much you work.
- Payouts: Weekly via a secure platform.
Important Eligibility Notes
- This is a freelance, hourly role. Internships are not offered.
- You must be authorized to work in your country of residence. No sponsorship is provided for this contract.
- International students may be able to sign up if their visa permits. Consult your tax/immigration advisor for specifics.
- No documentation supporting employment is available at this time.
- Compensation may differ for non-US locations.
Why Writers Are a Strong Fit
Great writing is clear thinking. This role pays you for both. If you enjoy editing, comparing drafts, and explaining choices, you'll plug in fast.
You'll sharpen your prompt craft, practice structured feedback, and learn how AI responds to language cues - skills that translate directly to content, editorial, and strategy work.
