EdgeMode and Vertical Data Team Up for 20MW AI Data Center in Marviken, Sweden
EdgeMode, a US-based data center developer, has joined forces with AI infrastructure firm Vertical Data to develop a 20MW AI data center located in Marviken, Sweden. The collaboration was formalized through a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), marking a clear step toward delivering high-performance AI infrastructure with sustainability in mind.
The project integrates EdgeMode’s Marviken Smart Energy Cluster, backed by a 95MW renewable Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), with Vertical Data’s AI cluster design expertise, GPU and server procurement capabilities, and innovative financing via its GPUFinancing.com platform. Key features include immersion cooling technology supporting up to 180kW per rack and district heating integration, ensuring efficient energy use.
Strategic Acquisition and Expansion Plans
EdgeMode acquired the Marviken cluster from Synthesis Analytics Production in June for $1.75 million. This acquisition transferred control of the PPA, secured a long-term lease on a 20MW high-performance computing data center under development, and granted freehold ownership of roughly 20,000 square meters (215,280 sq ft) of adjacent land.
The initial 20MW capacity is expected to be operational by the end of this quarter. Planning for the next 75MW phase is already advanced, with the potential to expand the facility to 300MW within five years. This scalable approach targets growing demand for AI and HPC hosting services.
Synergies and Market Approach
Simon Wajcenberg, CFO of EdgeMode Ltd., highlighted the partnership’s focus on combining renewable-powered data center infrastructure with AI hardware expertise and flexible financing options. This approach aims to deliver a compelling offering for AI and HPC clients worldwide.
Vertical Data’s CFO, Christopher Creatura, emphasized the importance of innovative business models alongside advanced technology. The collaboration plans to showcase customer-ready AI solutions at upcoming industry events, providing access to GPU clusters and flexible financing within a world-class Scandinavian facility.
Company Background and Shift in Focus
Originally, EdgeMode operated in cryptocurrency mining with facilities in New York and Illinois. After being acquired by Fourth Wave Energy in 2022, and following an SEC filing that noted funding challenges for Bitcoin mining hardware and hosting contracts, EdgeMode shifted focus. The company now concentrates on colocation and high-performance computing hosting services.
This project in Sweden represents their move into sustainable AI infrastructure, aligning with growing demand for environmentally responsible data center solutions.
