AI in Healthcare: Egypt Launches First Breast Cancer Detection Platform in the Middle East

Egypt has introduced the Middle East’s first fully local AI system for early breast cancer detection. This innovation was launched at Baheya Hospital in Sheikh Zayed by Dr. Amr Talaat, Minister of Communications and Information Technology, in partnership with the Ministry’s Applied Innovation Center and the Baheya Foundation.

The AI system analyzes mammogram images to provide accurate preliminary diagnoses. This improves routine screening efficiency, lowers treatment costs, and boosts recovery rates. Developed entirely by Egyptian engineers and data scientists, the platform reaches an accuracy rate of approximately 90 percent. It is already operational in Baheya’s hospitals in Haram and Sheikh Zayed.

Collaboration and Development

This project brought together radiologists, oncologists, data scientists, and software engineers. It uses a comprehensive Egyptian mammogram database containing over 60,000 images classified by type, location, density, and diagnostic confidence. The system detects and classifies abnormal growths as benign or malignant and learns continuously from ongoing medical feedback.

Dr. Amr Talaat highlighted the platform as a key step in applying AI to healthcare, emphasizing its role in protecting women’s health, which he described as a societal cornerstone. He also pointed out this initiative marks the beginning of a long-term partnership between the Applied Innovation Center and Baheya Hospital, with plans to extend the platform’s reach across Egypt.

Local Expertise and Integration

Eng. Tamer Shawky, Chairman of the Baheya Foundation’s Board of Trustees, praised the collaboration, noting it will enable early detection for thousands of women nationwide. He expressed pride in Baheya’s selection as the first institution to implement this advanced technology.

Dr. Ahmed Tantawy, supervisor of the Applied Innovation Center, confirmed that the AI engine was developed and trained on high-quality Egyptian medical data, which makes it more accurate and relevant than imported alternatives. The system is fully integrated into Baheya’s existing technical infrastructure, supporting smooth daily clinical workflows.

The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology reaffirmed its dedication to advancing AI-driven healthcare as part of Egypt’s digital transformation goals. Plans include refining and expanding this breast cancer detection platform to reach a wider population in the coming years.
