Exmar Invests €2M in AI Platform to Improve Crew Change Management

Belgian gas shipping company Exmar has invested in Berlin-based Tilla, a developer of AI-driven software for vessel crew change management. The €2 million (US$2.3 million) injection, also supported by Motion Ventures, a venture capital fund focused on digital transformation in global supply chains, will help Tilla expand its platform and market reach.

Exmar has already implemented Tilla’s platform across its fleet of over 40 gas carriers and floating gas terminals, benefiting from its data-driven approach to crew logistics. The investment signals confidence in Tilla’s ability to streamline crew change operations and reduce associated costs.

AI-Powered Crew Change Platform

Tilla’s software replaces manual processes with an integrated system that uses artificial intelligence to manage every aspect of crew changes. It consolidates multiple data sources, including voyage schedules, crew information, port agency inputs, real-time seafarer flight data, and travel requirements.

The platform automates critical steps such as planning, flight management, invoice handling, and reporting. It currently supports 35,000 crew trips to over 500 vessels, serving clients like Peter Döhle Schiffahrts, Essberger, Stödig Shipmanagement, Wilson, Exmar, and Seatrade.

Operational Benefits and Market Expansion

  • Reduces crew change costs by up to 24%
  • Saves up to 40% in time compared to conventional methods
  • Supports continuous optimization of crew logistics

With fresh funding, Tilla plans to expand into the Mediterranean and Asia-Pacific regions and grow its global team. This will enhance its capacity to deliver efficient crew change management to shipowners, operators, and managers worldwide.

Ariane Saverys, Exmar’s deputy chief operating officer, highlighted the impact of integrating Tilla’s solution: “We were impressed by its impact and the team’s expertise. Investing in Tilla reflects our confidence in its future and the value it brings to maritime crew logistics worldwide.”
