FedEx Enhances Cologne Operations with AI Sorting Robot

FedEx has introduced an AI-powered sorting robot at its Cologne air network facility, marking the first deployment of this technology within its European operations. This move supports FedEx’s ongoing effort to digitize processes and build a more efficient logistics network.

The Cologne location is FedEx’s largest air network site in Germany, employing over 900 team members across seven facilities. The new robotic arm, created by Hellebrekers B.V., is installed inside a protective cage on the small package sorting line where parcels first enter the system.

How the Robot Supports Operations

The robotic arm assists staff by handling the sorting of documents and smaller parcels weighing up to 4kg. It can process up to 1,000 items per hour and manage shipments to around 90 destinations simultaneously. By automating repetitive sorting tasks, the robot allows team members to concentrate on more complex activities that require human judgment.

Boris Stoffer, managing director network operations Germany at FedEx, explained, “AI-supported technologies like this help us manage shipments more effectively, enhance customer experience, and boost our competitive edge as ecommerce continues to drive growth in the market.” He also noted that these systems reduce physical strain on employees by taking over high-volume, repetitive tasks.

FedEx’s Broader Automation Strategy

FedEx began automating small package sorting in 2020 by installing four robotic arms at its Memphis Hub in Tennessee. Today, FedEx utilizes robotic sortation and identification systems at 17 U.S. sorting facilities including New York, Las Vegas, and Ohio.
