Financial Services Adopts AI Fastest, Sees Fewest Results

Financial services firms are using AI more than any other industry, but they're struggling to justify the investment. A survey of 500 UK business managers found that 91% of financial services professionals use AI tools, compared to 78% across all sectors. Yet only 13% of finance managers said they'd achieved a return on investment-less than half the 31% average across industries.

The gap between adoption and results reflects the sector's unique constraints. Finance and banking operate under strict regulation and answer to investors, making it difficult to deploy tools that can't be easily explained or that produce occasional errors.

Accuracy demands in the sector are uncompromising. A Goldman Sachs CIO said in 2024 that "0.1% inaccuracy is totally unacceptable." Current AI tools frequently fall short of this standard. Claude for Excel, for instance, has drawn complaints from finance professionals who find the traditional method-analysts working extended hours-more reliable.

The mismatch matters because financial services faces significant exposure to AI. A recent Anthropic report identified business and finance as the sector most affected by AI developments. The institutions that solve this adoption problem while competitors view AI as a cost drain will gain a meaningful edge.

For product development teams building tools for this sector, the challenge is clear: the market demands precision over speed. Tools that work well enough elsewhere won't work here.
