Finnish-Latvian Proposal for AI Gigafactory Boosts Europe's Digital Infrastructure
BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 16. DataCrunch Oy, a Finnish technology firm, together with the Republic of Latvia and international investors, has presented a conceptual proposal to the European Commission for building an AI gigafactory in Latvia. This initiative supports the European Union’s strategy to strengthen AI capabilities across the continent.
The planned AI data center will focus on developing energy-efficient computational systems critical for deploying AI technologies throughout Europe. This aligns with Latvia’s goals in digital transformation, economic growth, and technology development.
Latvia’s Role in Advancing AI Infrastructure
Ieva Jāgere, Director of the Investment and Development Agency of Latvia (LIAA), highlighted that establishing this infrastructure demonstrates Latvia’s reliability as a partner in key technological projects. Such developments enhance the country’s digital economy and increase its appeal for investments that add significant value.
Key Objectives of the AI Gigafactory Project
The AI data park aims to deliver a computing platform fully powered by renewable energy, meeting both EU and Latvian digital priorities. The project intends to:
- Create up to 300 high-skilled jobs, supporting regional growth through investments in data centers and connectivity.
- Offer substantial digital resources to startups, SMEs, and research institutions across Latvia and the EU.
- Boost Latvia’s AI service exports and strengthen Europe’s competitiveness in the global AI innovation landscape.
Raivis Bremšmits, Acting State Secretary of Latvia’s Ministry of Economics, noted that the project will position Latvia as a key hub within Europe’s AI ecosystem. It will improve digital infrastructure and foster innovation, ensuring the continent has the foundation needed for AI sector growth.
