Microsoft AI scientist Li Hongzhi joins Tongji University as tenured professor
Li Hongzhi, former head of generative AI at Microsoft Asia, has joined Tongji University in China as a distinguished tenured professor at its Institute of AI for Engineering. Li recently returned to China after more than a decade at Microsoft.
Li earned his PhD from Columbia University before joining Microsoft Research, where he spent over 10 years working on basic and applied research in computer science, software engineering, and hardware design. Most recently, he led the GenAI Group at Microsoft AI Asia.
The move reflects a broader pattern of Chinese researchers returning from the United States to take senior positions at home institutions. Tongji University is among China's leading research universities.
Why this matters for research professionals
Leadership changes at major AI labs signal where research priorities are shifting. Li's appointment underscores China's investment in building domestic generative AI expertise and attracting experienced researchers from global tech companies.
For those working in AI research, understanding these institutional moves helps track where significant research teams are forming and which universities are scaling their AI capabilities.
