Fremantle's AI Studio Launches Series Reimagining Famous Paintings
Imaginae Studios, Fremantle's generative AI label, has released its first project: a short-form YouTube series that uses AI to reimagine famous artworks from the past five centuries.
Art Awakens opens on paintings including Edvard Munch's The Scream, Vincent van Gogh's The Starry Night, and Edward Hopper's Nighthawks. Each episode invites viewers inside the painting's world to explore its emotional and narrative origins.
Spanish AI filmmaker Hilario Abad created the series. The first episode is already available online.
What Imaginae Studios Does
Fremantle launched Imaginae last year as a pan-genre label focused on building IP with "genuine creative merit." The studio positions generative AI as a serious creative medium capable of producing new forms of storytelling.
Art Awakens serves as a proof of concept for the types of projects Imaginae plans to develop for global audiences. The studio is exploring future partnerships across broadcasters, publishers, and online platforms.
How Creatives Should Think About This
James Duffen, Imaginae's chief executive, framed the work as revealing what already exists in great art rather than improving it. "Generative AI is a new creative language," he said. "When applied with taste, craft and cultural sensitivity, it allows us to tell stories that were previously impossible."
For creatives, the project demonstrates a specific use case: AI as a tool to expand audience access to cultural works. The series targets people who might never visit a gallery, making the artworks accessible through immersive video.
Andrea Scrosati, Fremantle's group chief operating officer, said the project gives "new creative talent the space to experiment and the freedom to realise bold ideas using incredible AI tools."
