From classroom to career: Miami-Dade and Google team up on AI education

Partnering to build Miami's AI-ready education system

Miami-Dade County Public Schools and Miami Dade College are teaming up with Google to bring practical AI tools into classrooms and campus operations. The goal is simple: better learning outcomes, more efficient workflows, and a clear path from school to career.

This work spans K-12 through college and into employment. It includes student access to AI, training for educators, pilots that support tutoring and decision-making, and a new way to connect skills with jobs.

What's rolling out in K-12

M-DCPS, the third-largest district in the U.S., is providing Gemini for Education to 100,000 high school students. All 18,000 teachers will get Google's Generative AI for Educators course, plus Gemini Academy trainings and certifications to help them work faster and teach with confidence.

Two pilots are underway. First, a personalized tutoring agent that acts like a secure "knowledge wallet," giving students custom lessons and ongoing academic support. Second, an administrative agent that helps district and school leaders interpret data quickly and make decisions on operations and management.

Music education is also getting an upgrade for grades 6-12 with new courses from TED-Ed, Education Through Music and YouTube artists. Built from prototypes created with Gemini Canvas, these apps pair curriculum-aligned videos with educator resources and interactive elements so students can engage deeply, even without instruments.

"Students learn in classrooms, they learn online, they learn in the community, and with Google's Gemini, our students now have an additional tool to safely and responsibly enrich, accelerate, and enhance their world of learning. The future is now!" - Dr. Jose L. Dotres, Superintendent, Miami-Dade County Public Schools

Preparing students for college and work

Leaders at M-DCPS and MDC share a goal: students carry what they learn in K-12 to college, then into the workforce. MDC is part of the Google AI for Education Accelerator, offering free access to career certificates, AI training and advanced AI tools. Thousands of students and faculty have completed AI Essentials training.

Google is also supporting Miami Dade College's leadership role in the National Applied AI Consortium (NAAIC), connecting community colleges, industry, and faculty to build a national AI talent pipeline. A $2 million grant will expand mentorship to 30 community colleges across 20 states.

Skills, credentials and hiring

Across Google teams-from DeepMind to Cloud and Education-there are nearly 3,000 courses available. These are now in one place with the launch of Google Skills, a global learning platform. In the last year, learners have completed over 26 million courses, labs and credentials.

On hiring, M-DCPS is using a skills-based approach to identify qualified candidates quickly. If you complete a Google Cloud Certificate, you now have a direct pathway to an interview with the district.

"We are proud to be leading the charge to ensure AI education is accessible to all. This transformative funding from Google marks a major milestone in MDC's ongoing mission to democratize AI training and empower educators to prepare students for the jobs of tomorrow." - Madeline Pumariega, President of Miami Dade College

What this means for educators

  • Use Gemini for lesson planning, differentiation and feedback loops that save prep time while improving clarity for students.
  • Lean on the district's Gemini Academy and Generative AI for Educators training to build practical classroom workflows.
  • Pilot the tutoring agent with targeted student groups; track outcomes like engagement, completion and assessment gains.
  • Adopt the music courses to close access gaps-no instruments required, but rich, standards-aligned experiences included.
  • For career pathways, connect students to Google Skills courses and credentials that tie directly to internships and jobs.
  • If you're hiring, consider skills-based screening to speed up selection while keeping quality high.
