Educational research is stuck. The good news: with a clear-eyed diagnosis and smart AI integration, it can regain relevance and impact.
A new article in the ECNU Review of Education by KU scholars lays out seven problems holding the field back and argues for using AI as a new cognitive layer in research-not a replacement for researchers, but a force multiplier for thinking, analysis, and synthesis.
"Research in education has some fundamental issues it needs to deal with, and AI has exacerbated that in some ways... we haven't affected much or had the influence that we want to have," said Rick Ginsberg, dean at KU. That blunt assessment is the starting point for progress.
The seven barriers holding back education research
- 1) Broken peer review: It validates findings but fuels burnout and delays. Some of history's most important work (Newton, Einstein) bypassed it entirely.
- 2) Quantification without context: Metrics dominate, meaning gets lost. Numbers without narrative skew decisions.
- 3) Overblown paradigm wars: Methods become tribes. Inquiry suffers.
- 4) Overgeneralizing across contexts: Overreliance on RCTs assumes one study applies to all. Classrooms and learners vary too much for blanket claims.
- 5) Neglect of individual diversity: Averages hide learners who matter.
- 6) Typical vs. possible mindset: Chasing the "typical and measurable" blocks the "possible and meaningful."
- 7) Conflicting results everywhere: Multiplicity without synthesis confuses practice and policy.
What AI unlocks (if we use it well)
Recent AI advances compress literature reviews, surface patterns across massive datasets, and help reframe questions quickly. They also force a rethink: what should students learn when machines can do many cognitive tasks faster than we can?
"AI is not a threat, and it's also not a panacea. But it can potentially help us improve," noted Neal Kingston. The opportunity is to reshape aims, methods, and the role humans play.
Practical moves for researchers and leaders
- Treat AI as infrastructure: Use LLMs for rapid evidence scans, code review, instrument drafting, and synthesis. Keep human judgment for study design, interpretation, and ethics.
- Design for context: Shift from single-site generalizations to multi-context designs, case comparisons, and mixed methods that respect variability.
- Prioritize the possible: Use design-based research, simulations, and N-of-1 studies to test what could work, not just what typically occurs.
- Rethink peer review flow: Preprints, registered reports, and open reviews reduce latency and improve rigor. Pair with AI-assisted screening to cut reviewer load.
- Embrace multiplicity: Expect conflicting findings. Use meta-analytic tools (human + AI) to map conditions under which results hold.
- Center diversity: Analyze differential effects by student characteristics and local conditions. Report heterogeneity as a primary finding, not an appendix.
- Open your pipeline: Involve students and teachers as co-researchers. Use classroom tools and AI to collect, annotate, and reflect on data in real time.
Ethics and quality guardrails
- Transparency: Disclose where and how AI was used (prompting, coding, synthesis).
- Bias checks: Compare AI outputs across prompts, models, and datasets. Document discrepancies.
- Privacy: Keep identifiable data out of third-party tools unless approved. Use local or institutionally governed models when needed.
- Attribution: Credit human and machine contributions clearly to protect integrity and trust.
What this means for classrooms
Every learner and every classroom is unique. Universal prescriptions underperform.
Use AI to co-analyze class data with students, prototype supports, and reflect on outcomes. Democratize research by letting students help design questions and interpret evidence.

- Week 1: Define a research question where context matters. Draft a short protocol and a checklist for AI use and disclosure.
- Week 2: Run an AI-assisted literature scan. Build a living evidence map with inclusion criteria and links.
