  • 76% have at least one department with an AI workflow fully in production.
  • AI lands best on mature processes: 43% report success on well-defined, automated workflows; 25% on new processes; 32% apply AI across various processes.
  • Only 34% have a dedicated team maintaining AI workflows. Responsibility otherwise sits in central IT (21%), departmental ops (25%), or is distributed (19%).

  • Pick three high-volume, rules-based processes with clean historical data (e.g., order exception handling, triage in customer ops, invoice matching).
  • Stand up or expand an enterprise integration platform (APIs, event bus, connectors). Define data contracts and versioning. Automate schema validations.
  • Create "golden" datasets for each use case with lineage and access controls. Set SLAs for freshness and completeness.
  • Instrument everything: accuracy by use case, cost per action, cycle time, and human override rates. Build dashboards shared with Finance, Risk, and IT.
  • Design autonomy gates: start with human-in-the-loop, advance to threshold-based approvals, then auto-commit for low-risk actions with instant rollback.

  • Use a clear RACI: the pod owns runbooks and uptime; departments own accuracy and outcomes; central IT owns security and platform standards.
  • Establish rotating on-call for AI workflows, just like any critical service.

  • Policy-as-code for data access, PII handling, and action scopes per workflow.
  • Tiered autonomy levels: observe, suggest, auto with approval, auto-commit.
  • Pre-production simulation with synthetic data and chaos tests for edge cases.
  • Continuous monitoring for drift, anomaly alerts, and automatic rollbacks when thresholds are breached.

Data breadth matters-so does control

The research shows a simple pattern: more integrated data sources lead to better AI outcomes. Aim for five or more sources per workflow, but enforce contracts and lineage so changes don't break production.

  • Unify identity and entity resolution (customers, orders, suppliers) across systems.
  • Catalog features used in prompts/agents and version them like code.
  • Quarantine low-quality feeds; never let them auto-commit actions.

Metrics Operations should track

  • Lead time to deploy changes and mean time to recovery (MTTR).
  • Workflow accuracy, percentage of autonomous actions, and human override rates.
  • Cost per action and cost per successful outcome.
  • Model/drift indicators and incident count by root cause (data, integration, model, policy).
  • Adoption: departments live, processes covered, and data freshness SLA attainment.

  • Connect five or more high-impact data sources through your integration platform.
