FTC Plans AI and Cloud Overhaul to Handle Growing Data Volume
The Federal Trade Commission released a five-year strategic plan Friday that commits the agency to modernizing its IT systems through artificial intelligence, machine learning, and predictive analytics. The 23-page document outlines how the FTC will manage the expanding volume of information its staff processes and generates.
The agency secured a $14.6 million grant from the Technology Modernization Fund in 2025 to build an AI-powered, cloud-based platform. The system will analyze data and detect fraud faster than current methods allow.
How the FTC Plans to Modernize
The FTC will replace outdated systems with cloud-based capabilities and implement AI and machine learning to transform its business processes. The agency also plans to adopt zero-trust security architecture, secure authentication practices, and continuous monitoring of systems and user behavior to prevent cyberattacks and data loss.
Cloud migration is a centerpiece of the plan. The FTC said it will use cloud-based tools "to the maximum extent feasible" to meet modern technology requirements.
Consumer Protection and Competition Enforcement Remain Core Priorities
Beyond technology upgrades, the FTC's strategic plan addresses consumer protection and antitrust enforcement. The agency will continue investigating unfair or deceptive business practices and expand efforts to help consumers and businesses combat fraud, identity theft, and unlawful telemarketing.
On the competition side, the FTC will enforce antitrust laws, challenge anticompetitive mergers, and conduct research to support open markets. The agency plans to work with domestic and international partners to strengthen enforcement.
