Call for Applications: Research on the Socio-Economic Impacts of AI in Africa

The International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and the United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) are seeking concept notes for research on how artificial intelligence (AI) affects people and economies in Africa. This initiative is part of the Artificial Intelligence for Development (AI4D) program and focuses on the changes AI brings to jobs, productivity, and inequality across the continent.

The goal is to support policymakers in ensuring AI benefits all segments of society, especially vulnerable and marginalized groups.

Research Focus

  • Labour and livelihoods: Investigate how AI is transforming jobs and work, with special attention to youth and informal workers.
  • Productivity and economic transformation: Examine how AI reshapes industries and contributes to inclusive economic growth.
  • Poverty and inequality: Identify risks related to some groups being excluded or not benefiting equally from AI advancements.
  • Global inequality and AI colonialism: Explore power imbalances in AI development and how to promote local innovation in Africa.

Funding Details

Up to four grants will be awarded, each up to 1 million Canadian dollars. Projects should last no longer than 36 months. Multi-country research is encouraged to ensure broad regional representation and coverage of the priority themes.

Who Can Apply?

Eligible applicants are organizations registered or incorporated in African low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Proposals may be submitted by a single organization or a consortium of up to five organizations, with one lead. Private sector partners can participate if they contribute financial or technical resources.

Teams should have expertise in social science research, AI, digital governance, or related areas. Multidisciplinary teams and the inclusion of early-career researchers, women, and underrepresented groups are highly encouraged.

Conditions

Applicants must demonstrate the financial and administrative capacity to manage the grant. Research must focus on Sub-Saharan African contexts and align with local or regional policy, governance, or development priorities.

Application Deadline

Submit your concept note by September 17, 2025.
