AI Math Tutor Boosts GED Pass Rates Among Adult Learners

Adult learners using an AI-powered math tutor in the GED & Me mobile app are passing their first test attempts at rates three percentage points higher than baseline, according to data released by GED Testing Service. Learners who continue studying and retake the test see pass rates climb as much as five percentage points.

The gains follow the July 2025 launch of an AI Math Tutor designed to address a persistent problem: nearly 60% of adults who sign up for GED preparation stall when they hit math, never reaching test day.

How the Tool Works

Since launching, the tutor has logged more than 18,000 learner interactions and 132,000 AI-powered chat exchanges. Learners spend an average of 10.7 minutes per session with the tool, and 46% of those answering math questions in the app use the AI support feature.

The most common requests involve foundational concepts: decimals, fractions, percentages, mean, area, and solving for variables. These topics typically create the biggest barriers for adults returning to education after time away.

Mobile Access Drives Engagement

More than 60% of GED learners now prepare using mobile devices. February 2026 marked the app's highest engagement month since launch, with 21,000 new users and 54,000 active users.

CT Turner, President of GED Testing Service, said the results reflect a basic principle: "When learners receive immediate, personalized support at the moment they're struggling, they're more likely to continue studying and complete their credential."

Expanding Beyond Math

GED Testing Service recently introduced an AI-powered Science tutor, extending real-time subject support across the app. The tools are built on learning science research and data from learner behavior.

The GED credential remains a direct pathway to better-paying jobs and college admission. Over 21 million adults have earned the credential since 1942.

The GED & Me app is available on iOS and Android.

Educators working with adult learners may find value in understanding how AI for Education tools address engagement and persistence challenges.
