Government Commits to Using AI for National and Continental Development
The Deputy Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Mr. Mohammed Adam Sukparu, has affirmed the government's dedication to leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a key driver for development across Ghana and Africa. His remarks came during the launch of AI Africa Labs in Accra, alongside the graduation of 250 Platinum AI Trainers at the Accra Digital Centre.
Mr. Sukparu highlighted the government's willingness to partner with private sector players, academic institutions, and development partners to ensure AI adoption is inclusive, ethical, and impactful. He praised AI Africa Labs for its role in localizing and democratizing AI technologies to support Africa's growth, create jobs, and convert innovative ideas into market-ready solutions.
Empowering Trainers for Industry and Economic Growth
The 250 Platinum AI Trainers, equipped with advanced AI skills, are expected to bolster Ghana's industries and institutions, contributing to economic expansion. The Deputy Minister stressed the importance of involving rural communities, women, persons with disabilities, and other marginalized groups in the AI transformation, ensuring no one is left behind.
AI Africa Labs: A Milestone for Digital Transformation
The launch of AI Africa Labs marks a significant development in Africa’s digital transformation efforts and supports Ghana’s 24-Hour Economy Policy. This policy promotes productivity, digital enablement, and the creation of a competitive, technology-driven workforce.
The event featured demonstrations of AI-powered innovations such as SmartChicken and SmartFish farming systems. These technologies have successfully reduced livestock mortality rates to below 3% while doubling yields, showcasing practical AI applications in agriculture.
Plans were also announced to expand AI Africa Labs’ initiatives to other African countries, starting with Nigeria and Kenya. This cross-continental expansion aims to apply AI solutions across key sectors for broader economic impact.
AI Africa Labs: Pan-African Initiative Targeting 200 Economic Sectors
AI Africa Labs is a Pan-African project funded by the African Diaspora Central Bank, in partnership with the Vanuatu Trade Commission–Ghana, and implemented by the Knowledge Web Center. The initiative targets AI applications in 200 critical sectors of Africa’s economy, including:
