Ghana Launches Ministerial AI Bootcamp to Mainstream Artificial Intelligence in Government
Date: July 28, 2025
Ghana has initiated a three-day Ministerial AI Bootcamp aimed at equipping Cabinet Ministers, Ministers of State, and designated government officials with the skills needed to integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI) into public service delivery. This initiative was launched by the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Hon. Samuel Nartey George, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
The bootcamp brings together policymakers and technical experts from various government sectors to co-create AI-driven solutions tailored to their specific needs. The event reflects a whole-of-government approach, with support from President John Dramani Mahama and technical guidance from UNDP.
Key Objectives of the Bootcamp
- Strengthen the capacity of government leaders to understand AI concepts relevant to policy development.
- Develop actionable AI use cases for different ministries.
- Create implementation roadmaps for AI adoption across government operations.
Hon. Samuel Nartey George emphasized that the goal is not to turn policymakers into coders but to give them enough knowledge to make informed decisions about AI policies. He highlighted practical applications, such as the Ministry of Health using AI-powered systems to monitor communicable diseases by analyzing hospital data—a measurable outcome to be developed during the bootcamp.
Additionally, Hon. George mentioned the potential use of AI in embassies to analyze and profile individuals entering the country, contributing to improved national security and governance.
Government-Wide Collaboration and Expected Outcomes
Chief of Staff Hon. Julius Debrah officially opened the event, emphasizing that all ministries are expected to deliver actionable AI use cases and clear implementation plans by the end of the programme. The collaboration between ministries and UNDP ensures technical oversight and alignment with national priorities.
This initiative represents a significant step in Ghana’s efforts to embed AI into government functions, improving service delivery and operational efficiency.
