Thomas Dohmke Steps Down as GitHub CEO Amid AI Competition
Thomas Dohmke, who has led GitHub since 2021, is leaving the company. Under his leadership, GitHub’s user base more than doubled, growing from 73 million developers in October 2021 to over 150 million today. Despite his departure, GitHub will continue its operations as part of Microsoft’s CoreAI group.
Dohmke joined Microsoft in 2015 after the acquisition of his startup, HockeyApp. When Microsoft acquired GitHub for $7.5 billion in 2018, Dohmke transitioned to the platform as product chief in mid-2021 and soon after replaced Nat Friedman as CEO. In a recent internal memo shared publicly, Dohmke announced he’s leaving to “become a founder again” but will stay until the end of the year to support the transition.
