Golden Globes Will Allow AI in Films, With Strict Limits on Performance
The Golden Globes will permit AI-assisted films to compete in the 2026 awards season, provided humans remain the primary creative force. The organization banned only two things: performances substantially generated by AI and unauthorized use of actors' digital likenesses or voices.
This approach differs sharply from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which recently imposed broader restrictions on AI-authored screenplays and performances. The Globes is taking a more permissive stance, treating AI as a supporting tool rather than a disqualifying factor.
What the Rules Actually Say
Under the new guidelines, generative AI "will not automatically disqualify" entries as long as "human creative direction, artistic judgment, and authorship remain primary throughout the production process."
The rules specify that AI should not replace core creative work in direction, writing, composition, or animation. For performances, AI can only enhance a credited actor's existing work-it cannot create new performances outright.
Any use of an actor's likeness or voice without permission remains strictly prohibited.
What This Means for Filmmakers
The Golden Globes has essentially created a testing ground for how major award shows will handle AI in the coming years. The 2026 ceremony will be the first major awards show where AI-assisted films can theoretically compete equally with traditionally produced work.
The decision signals that the Globes accepts technological integration in filmmaking, provided it doesn't displace human creativity. For creatives, this means understanding where AI fits as a tool versus where human judgment must lead.
