Golden Globes Allows AI in Productions, Sets Human Creative Control as Standard
The Golden Globes released its first formal AI eligibility rules, establishing that artificial intelligence does not automatically disqualify a film, television show, or podcast from consideration. The guidelines require that human creative direction remain primary throughout production.
Submissions open June 1, with a deadline of October 30. The Golden Globes will announce nominations on December 7 and air the ceremony on January 10, 2027, on CBS and Paramount+.
What the Rules Actually Say
The core standard is straightforward: AI and generative tools can be used during production, but only if they serve a supporting or enhancing role. The credited human creators must originate the core creative contributions-direction, writing, composition, animation, and performance.
The eligibility committee will review submissions and may request additional information to assess AI's role in the work. Creators who fail to provide requested materials on time risk ineligibility.
Acting Categories Have Stricter Limits
Performances submitted for acting awards must be primarily derived from the credited performer's work. AI-generated performances are not eligible.
Actors can use AI tools to enhance or support their performance if the work remains fundamentally human-driven and under their creative control. However, submissions cannot include performances created through unauthorized use of a performer's digital likeness, voice, or biometric data.
Non-Performance Work Follows General Standards
For cinematography, editing, sound, and other craft categories, AI tools can assist as long as credited humans make the primary creative decisions. The guidelines specify that AI may not substitute for core human authorship.
Non-English language and independent films can now be submitted for individual acting categories without being entered in the Best Motion Picture category, provided they meet other eligibility requirements.
New Podcast Rules
Eligible podcasts must come from a curated list of the top 30 podcasts during the eligibility period (January 1 - September 30). Luminate, a music and podcast data firm, will determine rankings based on verified metrics.
For creatives navigating these requirements, understanding how to document your creative process and AI usage will matter. The committee's ability to request additional materials means transparency about your tools and decision-making will strengthen eligibility claims.
