Good Governance and Oversight Are Key to AI Development in Malaysia, Says PM Anwar
At a recent event in Cyberjaya, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim emphasized the need for strong governance principles and proper oversight in Malaysia’s artificial intelligence (AI) development. He stressed that these elements are critical to ensure the country’s digital transformation is effective and sustainable.
While AI and other emerging technologies offer significant opportunities, Anwar warned that careless implementation could lead to negative consequences. He referenced Malaysia’s past privatisation efforts as a cautionary example, where poor governance and lack of transparency resulted in costly failures and increased national debt.
“At that time, it wasn't really ‘privatisation’ but more like ‘piratisation’ that bypassed proper processes,” he said. Many projects awarded back then ended up with major losses, impacting the nation and its people. This history highlights why good governance must be built into AI initiatives from the ground up.
Government Commitment to AI Development
The MADANI Government has allocated tens of billions of ringgit to advance AI technologies across various ministries and agencies. Significant funding has been directed to the Ministry of Communications, Ministry of Digital, Ministry of Higher Education, and programs integrating AI into schools.
This financial commitment reflects confidence in AI’s potential to benefit Malaysia’s development. However, Anwar pointed out that progress must be guided by clear ethical standards, social justice, and human values. Without these safeguards, disparities between urban and rural areas, the wealthy and the poor, as well as educational access, could widen further.
“We must raise the ceiling by improving our technological capacity, and at the same time, raise the floor so that people at the grassroots benefit as well,” he remarked.
Embedding Human Values in AI Education
Anwar also urged educators and academic institutions to maintain a focus on the human dimension within AI education and development. He highlighted the importance of balancing technological advancement with ethical considerations.
“Focus on AI technology must not neglect the human dimension. We must defend that,” he said.
For IT professionals and developers interested in expanding their AI expertise while keeping ethical considerations in mind, exploring comprehensive AI training courses can be invaluable. Resources such as Complete AI Training’s latest courses offer practical skills that align with responsible AI development.
