Over 400 colleges now offer Google's accredited AI certificate
More than 400 higher education institutions across all 50 states have joined Google's AI for Education Accelerator, a free program designed to build AI skills among students, faculty and staff. The program provides access to the Google AI Professional Certificate, which has received a credit recommendation from the American Council on Education-making it one of the first AI programs eligible for college credit.
Google developed the certificate with input from major employers and designed it around practical skills that apply across industries. Students learn to solve workplace problems while potentially earning credits toward their degree.
How universities are implementing the program
Universities including the University of Arkansas, the University of Texas System, and Vanderbilt University have begun rolling out the certificate to students and staff.
The Texas A&M University System launched an AI Learnathon to train staff and faculty. At the University of Virginia, students who complete the certificate can work with local small businesses to help them adopt AI tools. The University of Michigan made the certificate available to all students, faculty, staff and alumni through its Center for Academic Innovation.
What educators should know
The certificate focuses on practical, job-ready skills rather than theoretical concepts. Faculty members can access additional resources through Google's Gemini Faculty Fundamentals video series.
Accredited nonprofit colleges and universities can apply to join the Accelerator at no cost. More information is available at grow.google/edu.
For educators looking to build their own AI knowledge, the AI Learning Path for Teachers offers structured training in classroom applications.
