New Google-NUS Partnership to Advance Applied AI Research and Talent Development in Singapore

The National University of Singapore (NUS) and Google have formed a strategic collaboration focused on accelerating applied AI research and developing skilled AI professionals. This partnership strengthens Singapore’s goal to become a global hub for AI innovation, supports its digital transformation agenda, and enhances the collaboration between industry and academia to boost the local research ecosystem.

During the NUS School of Computing’s 50th Anniversary Gala Dinner, the two parties signed agreements to establish a joint research and innovation centre. This event celebrated five decades of contributions by NUS Computing to education and research in computing.

The agreement was signed by Professor Tulika Mitra, Dean of NUS Computing, and Ms Serene Sia, Country Director for Singapore and Malaysia at Google Cloud. The ceremony was witnessed by Mr Tan Kiat How, Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Digital Development and Information, alongside Professor Tan Eng Chye, NUS President, and Ms Yolyn Ang, Vice President for Knowledge and Information Partnerships, Asia Pacific, Google.

Focus on Research and Talent Development

Professor Liu Bin, NUS Deputy President (Research and Technology), highlighted the value of this partnership. He noted that combining NUS’ strengths in AI and multidisciplinary research with Google’s expertise and technology creates a strong foundation for impactful research and practical application.

A main focus is talent development through:

  • Endowed professorships to strengthen faculty leadership and research quality.
  • Mentorship and training programmes to equip future AI scientists and engineers.
  • Hands-on research projects that address real-world problems.

Professor Liu emphasized confidence that their joint efforts will produce AI innovations that transform industries such as education and healthcare.

Building on a Longstanding Partnership

Ms Serene Sia from Google Cloud explained that the partnership builds on prior collaborations, including:

  • Google Developer Group on campus to enhance students’ software skills.
  • Google Cloud’s role as a pioneering industry partner of the NUS AI Institute.
  • AI-driven biomedical research collaborations.
  • The world’s first AI-powered legal journal podcast with NotebookLM.
  • The Google PhD Fellowship programme supporting outstanding computer science research.

She stressed that combining NUS’ multidisciplinary research capabilities with Google’s AI infrastructure will accelerate safe and responsible AI development. This joint centre aims to drive scientific advances that improve public health and learning experiences among other areas.
