Google Launches Opal: A No-Code Tool for Building AI Mini Apps
Google has introduced Opal, a new artificial intelligence tool that allows users to create simple applications without writing any code. This tool debuted recently, following Amazon Web Services’ launch of Kiro, an AI-powered integrated development environment aimed at accelerating software projects.
How Opal Works
Opal starts with a chatbot interface similar to ChatGPT. Users describe the application’s task in natural language and can provide additional data or connect external tools to support the process. Based on this input, Opal automatically generates a simple application.
Once the app is created, it can be shared easily via a link, much like Google Docs sharing. Users also have the option to edit their Opal-generated applications before publishing. The editing happens in a visual editor that displays the app as a collection of cards on a virtual canvas.
Each card represents either input or processing steps, and users can connect multiple cards to build workflows. For instance, one could create an app that generates a product description and then produces a promotional video based on that text. The visual editor supports natural language instructions, allowing customization of each step.
Behind the Scenes
Opal uses multiple AI models to create applications, though Google hasn’t confirmed exactly which ones. A likely candidate is Gemini 2.5 Pro, Google’s recent large language model known for strong coding capabilities. However, Opal’s focus on simple apps suggests it might be powered by a more efficient, lightweight model. For video clip generation, Google likely uses its Veo video algorithms.
Prebuilt Apps and Availability
- Opal launches with over six prebuilt apps, including tools for designing video games.
- Other apps target business needs such as generating marketing materials and conducting product research.
- The tool is currently available in the U.S. through a public beta program on Google Labs, which hosts many experimental AI projects.
Google Labs offers a variety of AI tools that cover tasks from web searching to interface design automation.
