Google.org opens $30M funding call for AI-driven science research

Google.org is accepting applications for a $30 million global funding initiative supporting nonprofits, academic institutions, and social enterprises developing AI-based solutions in health and climate science. The application deadline is May 1, 2026.

Selected organizations will receive between $500,000 and $3 million per project, plus access to a six-month accelerator program that includes pro bono engineering support, technical training, and Google Cloud credits.

Two priority areas

Google.org is focusing on two main research domains:

  • AI for health and life sciences: genomics, neuroscience, and drug discovery
  • AI for climate and environmental science: agriculture, energy systems, and climate modeling

Projects must place AI at the center of their methodology, either by developing new models or applying existing tools in novel ways. Applicants need to demonstrate clear scientific ambition, measurable outcomes, and a defined pathway to impact.

What the funding covers

Beyond direct funding, selected projects receive access to the Google.org Accelerator program. This includes mentorship from Google engineers, technical training, and support for scaling AI infrastructure and deployment.

Organizations also gain access to Google Cloud credits and AI tools for development. Google.org emphasizes that outputs - datasets, models, and research findings - should be made publicly available under open licenses where possible to support broader scientific progress.

Eligibility and application details

Only nonprofits, academic institutions, and social enterprises with a clear social impact focus can apply. Individuals without organizational affiliation are not eligible.

The initiative reflects Google.org's position that AI can compress decades of research into months. Leslie Yeh, Director of Scientific Progress at Google.org, said the fund supports "bold bets that can unlock systemic transformation" rather than incremental improvements.

More information about the application process is available through Google.org's official channels. If your organization works in AI-driven scientific research, you can explore AI for Science & Research learning resources to strengthen your team's technical capabilities.
