Google Introduced a New Way to Use Search. Proceed With Caution.
Google recently launched AI Mode, a new feature that changes how users search online. Instead of typing keywords and seeing a list of websites, AI Mode lets you ask questions and get answers in a chatbot style similar to ChatGPT or Google’s Gemini.
This new mode is rolling out globally and will appear as a tab alongside traditional search results on Google.com. It aims to simplify finding information by providing direct responses rather than links. But there are important limitations to keep in mind.
Where AI Mode Falls Short
During testing, AI Mode showed some clear weaknesses with basic, real-world searches. For example, when asked to find parks in Oakland, California, with picnic tables, the tool listed parks that actually had none. Even after correcting it, the same mistake repeated.
- Asked to locate an affordable carwash nearby, AI Mode provided a service priced at $25. Upon arrival, the actual cost was $65.
- When searching for a grocery store selling an exotic pepper paste, the system suggested a nearby Whole Foods that didn’t carry the product.
These examples highlight that AI Mode can sometimes produce inaccurate or outdated information. It doesn’t yet match the reliability of traditional search methods for certain local or price-sensitive queries.
What This Means for Your Searches
Traditional web searches still have value, especially for fact-checking and verifying details. AI Mode can be useful for brainstorming or quick summaries but shouldn’t be your sole tool for decisions requiring precision.
