Google's Learning Chief: AI Cannot Solve Education's Core Problem
Ben Gomes, Google's head of learning technologies, says artificial intelligence cannot address the biggest challenge facing education: student motivation. While AI excels at personalizing content and organizing information, it cannot generate the curiosity and engagement that drive real learning.
Gomes made the statement in an interview with Forbes when asked what the actual problem in learning is today. His answer was direct: "Technology can improve how you learn and the details of it, but why you learn is a very human thing."
AI Delivers Content, Not Motivation
AI tools are effective at tailoring lessons to individual needs, recommending content, and adjusting difficulty levels. The problem education faces has shifted. Access to information is no longer the bottleneck.
The real challenge is engagement. Students need motivation to use the resources available to them. Motivation depends on human curiosity and intent-something AI systems cannot generate on their own.
The Human Element Remains Essential
Education requires more than consuming information. It involves mentorship, interaction, and emotional connection. Teachers inspire students, build confidence, and create belonging in ways AI cannot replicate.
While AI can assist teachers, it cannot replace the empathy and guidance that come from real human relationships in a learning environment.
Risks of Over-Reliance on AI Tools
Experts warn that excessive dependence on AI may undermine critical thinking and independent learning. Students who rely too heavily on AI-generated answers may not develop problem-solving skills or deep understanding.
AI works best as a support tool, not a replacement for active learning and thinking.
