Grammarly Introduces AI Writing Agents to Boost Your Writing and Detect Plagiarism
Grammarly has launched a new set of AI-powered writing agents aimed at tackling specific writing challenges directly within its Docs platform. Unlike the basic suggestion tools many writers are used to, this update shifts Grammarly into a more structured productivity tool with specialised AI support.
The Docs interface, free for all users, now includes these AI agents, but access to them is limited to paid subscribers. These agents provide focused assistance, from proofreading to plagiarism detection, streamlining the writing process for professionals and students alike.
How the AI Agents Work
Writers can write directly in Docs and then apply different AI agents depending on their needs. For example, you can run a proofreading check, verify citations, or scan for plagiarism without leaving the platform. Additionally, an AI Assistant is available to help brainstorm ideas, summarise content, or provide feedback on your writing.
Luke Behnke, Grammarly’s VP of Product Management, explained the shift: “We’re moving beyond simple suggestions to intelligent agents that understand context and actively help users achieve their communication goals.”
The Eight AI Agents Available at Launch
- Reader Reactions: Predicts how your target audience might respond, highlighting key takeaways and questions.
- AI Grader: Offers students an estimated grade and instructor-style feedback on their work.
- Citation Finder: Automatically finds and inserts references to support or challenge your claims.
- Expert Review: Provides technical and detailed input as if from a subject-matter expert.
- Proofreader: Suggests in-line corrections that match your writing style and audience.
- AI Detector: Identifies whether parts of the text were written by a human or AI.
- Plagiarism Checker: Cross-checks your writing against databases, papers, and published work to flag uncredited similarities.
- Paraphraser: Adjusts tone, style, and clarity to fit different contexts effectively.
Why This Matters for Writers
Traditional AI writing tools often require multiple prompts and trial-and-error to get useful results. Grammarly’s segmented agents reduce this friction by providing targeted, context-aware help in fewer steps. This setup can save valuable time for academic writers, creatives, and business professionals who want precision and speed.
