Guardian Columnist Becomes First to Get Certified as Human-Written

Peter Lewis, a columnist for The Guardian, is the first journalist worldwide to receive certification that his work is entirely human-created. Proudly Human, a new verification company, issued the credential after assessing Lewis's writing process and his use of AI tools.

The certification arrives as newsrooms grapple with how to signal authorship in an era when AI can generate readable text. Readers increasingly need assurance about whether the content they consume came from a person or a machine.

What the certification covers

Proudly Human's process accepts certain AI uses: spell-checking, grammar correction, background research, and editorial questions. The company draws a line at using AI for drafting, rewriting, or generating the core arguments and voice of a piece.

Lewis said the certification gives writers control over their own work. "While regulation around AI is essential-especially stopping illegal harvesting of creators' work-writers also need to use these tools mindfully," he said.

The certification mark lets readers choose what they read based on how it was made. It also gives writers recognition for work that remains theirs alone.

Why this matters now

Dr. Alan Finkel, executive chairman of Proudly Human, founded the company to address a fundamental problem: distinguishing human-created content from machine-generated work as AI spreads across industries.

"Creators deserve recognition for their creativity, and consumers deserve clarity about what they're reading," Finkel said.

The certification model is designed to be realistic rather than absolute. It acknowledges that writers already use tools-spell-checkers, research databases, editorial feedback-without losing authorship. The question now is where the line sits when those tools include generative AI.

Lewis writes about his certification process in his latest Guardian column. More details on Proudly Human's standards are available on its website.

For writers navigating AI tools and their role in the creative process, understanding both the capabilities and limits of these systems is essential. Resources on AI for Writers and Generative AI and LLM can help professionals make informed choices about how they work.
