Hanoi schools report 92% student engagement with AI-powered classrooms

Giảng Võ Secondary School in Hanoi launched Google Digital Classrooms across three subject areas this academic year, reaching 156 students and 21 teachers. The school provided laptops and tablets to all participants and invested in 582 electronic lectures and nearly 20,000 digital resources.

Independent assessments found that student engagement, knowledge retention, and IT skills all exceeded 92%, according to school principal Tô Thị Hải Yến.

How the program works

Teachers completed Google Certified Educator Level 1 certification, covering Google Workspace for education and AI applications in teaching, assessment, and classroom management. The model centers on student-led learning with teacher oversight of online content.

Yến said the approach supports both academic performance and digital citizenship skills. The school plans to expand the program to additional grade levels by 2026-2027.

Other schools adopt similar approaches

Nghĩa Tân Secondary School's Literature Department recently held a lesson combining AI with reading comprehension. Students watched an AI-generated interview with Vietnamese author Nguyễn Nhật Ánh to better understand his works.

Teacher Nguyễn Thị Tuyết cautioned that AI serves as a tool only. "AI cannot replace the direct reading experience or human emotions students feel when engaging with literary works," she said.

Obstacles remain in suburban areas

Infrastructure gaps are slowing adoption across Hanoi. Schools in suburban districts lack adequate internet connectivity, learning devices, and technological infrastructure. Teachers struggle with new software and designing digital lessons.

Nghiêm Hồng Trung, principal of Quốc Oai High School, said digital transformation requires long-term effort. Teacher training in digital skills is essential, he added.

The broader strategy

Nguyễn Văn Hiền, director of Hanoi's Department of Education and Training, said the sector is moving beyond simply applying technology toward building a coordinated digital education system. The focus includes STEM and STEAM education, robotics, and English proficiency.

By 2026-2027, Hanoi's education system will prioritize digital transformation using data and AI as core drivers.
