HarperCollins expands into AI animation with two new partnerships

HarperCollins Publishers is partnering with two AI-powered animation studios to adapt its book catalog into video content, marking a shift toward AI-assisted storytelling that's drawing both interest and criticism from the publishing world.

The publisher announced a multiyear deal with Toonstar to produce original YouTube series based on HarperCollins titles. The first project, Friendship List, adapts a young adult novel and will be accompanied by a graphic novel from HarperAlley, the publisher's imprint for children and teens.

This comes days after Harlequin, a HarperCollins division, signed a separate agreement with AI entertainment company Dashverse to coproduce 40 animated micro-dramas based on Harlequin Romance titles. The first adaptation, A Fairy-Tail Ending, launches in April.

What the deals mean for authors

HarperCollins said authors will be consulted on adaptations and receive royalties. The company framed Toonstar as keeping "artists at the center of the process," though details on how AI is used in production remain limited.

The deals signal how publishers view AI as a tool to expand stories into new formats and reach audiences on platforms like YouTube. But the announcements have generated pushback from writers concerned about how AI is being deployed in creative work.

For writers, the question is whether these partnerships represent genuine collaboration or a cost-cutting measure that diminishes creative input. The terms HarperCollins outlined-consultation and royalties-suggest some protections, but the scope of AI's role in production remains unclear.
