HBCU AI Immersion Experience Sparks Creative Exploration

On July 12, 18 students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) gathered at the Syracuse University Dick Clark Los Angeles Program office in North Hollywood for a unique opportunity. Hosted by the Newhouse School in Los Angeles, the HBCU AI Immersion Experience focused on how artificial intelligence intersects with media and storytelling.

The event offered a hands-on workshop led by Milton Santiago, assistant professor of visual communications. Students learned to use AI-powered tools to create early-stage creative content like concept art, mood boards, and visual sequences relevant to film, music, and advertising projects.

Bridging Media, AI, and Career Paths

Organized in partnership with the Entertainment Industry College Outreach Program (EICOP), the immersion introduced attendees to Newhouse’s professional master’s programs. Students also got a preview of Newhouse LA, a semester-long program that combines coursework with internships and networking opportunities in Southern California’s entertainment industry.

Hua Jiang, interim associate dean of diversity, equity, inclusivity, and accessibility, led the Newhouse team behind the event. Collaborating with Newhouse LA director Robin Howard, this marked the fourth event aimed at HBCU students over the past few years.

“AI offers fresh ways to generate ideas and helps creative professionals work more efficiently,” Jiang said. The event was designed to provide a clear look at emerging media technologies and potential career paths in entertainment.

Real-World Insights from Alumni

Wes Whiteside, associate director of diversity, equity, inclusivity, and accessibility, moderated an alumni panel sharing firsthand experiences. Graduates working in media and entertainment offered practical advice for students considering graduate studies or a career in this field.
