Honeywell and Borouge Introduce AI-Driven Autonomous Petrochemical Operations in UAE
Borouge Plc, a key player in polyolefins solutions, is partnering with Honeywell to test AI-powered autonomous operations at its UAE facilities. This collaboration focuses on creating the petrochemical industry's first AI-driven control room capable of full-scale, real-time operation.
Advancing Operational Efficiency with AI
Hazeem Sultan Al Suwaidi, CEO of Borouge, highlighted the impact of their AI, Digitalisation, and Technology (AIDT) transformation programme. “By teaming up with AI leaders like Honeywell, we’re speeding up growth, improving efficiency, and boosting shareholder value,” he said. This project enhances Borouge’s competitive position as part of their broader AIDT roadmap.
Combining Expertise for Autonomous Control
Both companies are pooling their knowledge in process technology and autonomous control to explore the use of Agentic AI and advanced machine learning algorithms. George Bou Mitri, president of Honeywell Industrial Automation for the Middle East and surrounding regions, stated, “Integrating AI and automation into core operations helps improve efficiency, safety, and performance. This partnership is a clear example of how technology can transform industrial operations at scale.”
Impact on Borouge’s UAE Operations
The proof-of-concept will be deployed at Borouge’s Ruwais site, the largest petrochemical complex globally. Autonomous operations aim to optimise production, reduce energy consumption, enhance safety, and lower costs. This initiative is a key part of Borouge’s AIDT programme, expected to generate $575 million in value this year.
In 2024, Borouge’s portfolio of over 200 AIDT initiatives across operations, health and safety, sales, sustainability, and product innovation delivered $573 million in value.
Why This Matters for Operations Professionals
- AI-driven control rooms can streamline decision-making and real-time monitoring.
- Autonomous operations reduce human error and improve safety standards.
- Energy optimisation and cost reduction contribute directly to operational KPIs.
- Collaboration between process technology and AI experts accelerates innovation.
Operations teams should monitor these developments closely as they set new operational benchmarks in the petrochemical sector.
