Honeywell and Borouge Introduce AI-Powered Autonomous Petrochemical Operations in UAE
Borouge Plc, a leading player in the petrochemicals sector, is partnering with Honeywell to pilot AI-driven autonomous operations at its UAE facilities. This proof of concept marks the industry's first AI-controlled room for full-scale, real-time petrochemical plant management, setting a new operational benchmark.
Hazeem Sultan Al Suwaidi, CEO of Borouge, highlighted the company’s ongoing AI, Digitalization and Technology (AIDT) transformation program. He noted that partnering with global AI experts like Honeywell accelerates growth, boosts operational efficiency, and enhances shareholder value. This project reinforces Borouge’s competitive position as it advances its AIDT initiatives.
Collaboration Focus and Benefits
Borouge and Honeywell will combine their expertise in process technology and autonomous control to explore the deployment of Agentic AI solutions and sophisticated machine learning algorithms. According to George Bou Mitri, President of Honeywell Industrial Automation for the Middle East and surrounding regions, this partnership demonstrates how integrating AI and automation can improve efficiency, safety, and operational performance at scale.
The initiative targets Borouge’s Ruwais site, the world’s largest integrated petrochemical complex, aiming to optimize production, decrease energy consumption, improve safety, and reduce operational costs. This effort is a core part of Borouge’s AIDT program, which has already delivered close to $573 million in value from over 200 projects in 2024 and is expected to generate $575 million this year.
