Hong Kong Minister Urges Stronger Moral Education in Universities After AI Misuse Incident

The recent case of a University of Hong Kong (HKU) undergraduate accused of using AI to create pornographic images of classmates has sparked calls for enhanced moral education in higher education institutions. Secretary for Education Christine Choi Yuk-lin emphasized the need for universities to strengthen values education among students.

Following a criminal investigation launched by the Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data, Choi highlighted that while the incident is isolated, it presents an opportunity for universities to reflect on their role in shaping students' ethical standards.

Holding Universities Accountable

Choi stressed that universities should be accountable not only for managing student behavior but also for integrating values and moral education into their curricula. She pointed out that HKU's long-standing reputation is built on the efforts of many generations and should not be overshadowed by this one case.

"Universities should be held accountable in handling such behaviours in students, or in terms of curriculum and teaching," she said.

Addressing the Challenges of AI Development

With AI technology advancing swiftly, the minister urged universities to intensify their efforts in educating students about responsible and ethical use of such tools. This approach aims to prepare students to meet societal expectations and contribute positively to the community.

Choi emphasized the responsibility of universities to nurture students' values and moral character, ensuring that they become future pillars of society.
