Humans Are Starting to Talk More Like ChatGPT, Study Claims
AI isn’t just influencing how we write—it’s shaping how we speak. A recent study suggests that ChatGPT’s language patterns are making their way into everyday conversation.
Since ChatGPT became widely used, it has changed the way we communicate both with machines and with each other. People have debated how to spot AI-generated text by looking for certain signals, like the use of specific punctuation. But new research indicates those signals might become harder to detect because humans are adopting AI’s language style.
The Study and Its Findings
Researchers from the Max Planck Institute for Human Development in Germany examined the impact of ChatGPT on spoken language. They looked at millions of pages of emails, essays, academic papers, and news articles, then asked ChatGPT to “polish” these texts. From this, they identified a set of words ChatGPT tends to favor—words like “delve,” “underscore,” “bolster,” and “swift.” These were labeled “GPT words.”
Next, they analyzed the frequency of these GPT words in over 360,000 YouTube videos and 771,000 podcast episodes from before and after ChatGPT’s release. The results showed a noticeable increase in the use of GPT words in spoken English.
This suggests a feedback loop where AI language patterns influence human speech. As Levin Brinkmann, one of the study’s co-authors, explained, people tend to imitate language from sources they see as knowledgeable or important—including AI.
Why This Matters for Writers
Language evolves naturally, but AI is becoming a new factor in that evolution. Writers need to be aware that AI tools don’t just assist with writing—they also shape the language styles readers and listeners expect.
As AI influences vocabulary and phrasing, writers might find themselves unconsciously adopting AI-preferred words or expressions. This can affect tone, clarity, and even authenticity in communication.
- Be mindful of how AI language patterns may subtly shift your writing style.
- Consider whether adopting AI-favored words strengthens or dilutes your voice.
- Stay informed about language trends influenced by AI to keep your writing relevant.
Caveats and Considerations
The study focused on specific ChatGPT models such as GPT-4 and GPT-3.5-turbo. Future AI versions may favor different words or styles, meaning these findings might change over time.
Also, much of the data came from academic or scripted sources, so the impact on casual spoken language is less clear. Language shifts are influenced by many factors, so AI is just one piece of the puzzle.
Still, the research highlights how AI is entering our subconscious and influencing how we communicate.
Looking Ahead
Writers should keep an eye on how AI continues to shape language and culture. Understanding these influences can help you maintain control over your voice and adapt your writing effectively.
