HSB Launches AI Liability Insurance for Small Businesses
Hartford Steam Boiler, part of Munich Re Group, introduced AI liability insurance designed to cover losses that standard business policies exclude. The product protects small and medium-sized companies from lawsuits tied to their use of artificial intelligence.
The coverage addresses three main exposure areas: bodily injury claims, property damage claims, and personal and advertising injury claims stemming from AI-generated content.
What the Coverage Includes
Bodily Injury: If an AI system causes physical harm-such as an AI-controlled HVAC system creating condensation that causes someone to slip and fall-the policy covers resulting liability claims.
Property Damage: The coverage applies when AI tools cause damage to physical property. An example: an employee uses an AI chatbot to generate appliance installation instructions, leading to water damage.
Personal and Advertising Injury: This covers claims of privacy violations, defamation, or copyright infringement in AI-generated marketing materials, blogs, or social media posts.
Why It Matters
An HSB survey of 1,000 small and medium-sized businesses found that 74 percent already use AI tools, and 91 percent plan to adopt them. Marketing accounts for the largest share of AI use at 47 percent, followed by operations (43 percent), research and development (42 percent), and social media (38 percent).
Timothy Zeilman, global head of product ownership for HSB, said the coverage "helps remove that uncertainty by filling the gaps in coverage, so businesses can stay ahead of emerging risks."
The product requires regulatory approval before carriers can add it to their business policies. HSB does not sell the coverage directly to businesses.
