Iceland Gives AI to Every Teacher in New National Pilot
Anthropic and Iceland's Ministry of Education and Children are partnering to bring the AI assistant Claude to teachers across the nation. This is one of the first comprehensive national AI education pilots in the world, giving educators access to advanced tools to see how they can improve teaching.
The initiative will provide hundreds of teachers, from Reykjavik to the most remote villages, with Claude access. They will also receive training materials and a dedicated support network to help them integrate the technology into their work.
Supporting Teachers, Not Replacing Them
The core of this program is to see how AI can directly benefit schools by supporting teachers. The goal is to reduce administrative burdens and free up time for what matters most: teaching students.
"We're proud to partner with Iceland's Ministry of Education and Children to help teachers save time and create better learning experiences for their students," said Thiyagu Ramasamy, Anthropic's Head of Public Sector. "For too long, teachers have been weighed down by paperwork and administrative tasks."
With Claude, Icelandic teachers can create personalized lesson plans, adapt materials for different learning needs, and give students AI-powered support. The system learns from each educator's methods and materials, making it a more effective assistant over time.
Because the AI recognizes Icelandic and other languages, it can also help teachers better support a wider range of students, creating more inclusive learning environments.
A Proactive Approach to Technology
Iceland's government sees this as a necessary step forward. They are choosing to actively test and integrate AI on their own terms, with the needs of educators as the main focus.
"Artificial intelligence is here to stay. It is developing at a tremendous pace, and it is important to use its power while at the same time preventing harm," said Guðmundur Ingi Kristinsson, Minister of Education and Children in Iceland. "Here, we take the leap and embark on an ambitious project... with the needs of teachers as our guiding principle."
As AI tools like Claude become more common in the workplace, understanding how to use them is becoming a fundamental skill. For educators looking to get ahead, specific training is essential. You can explore certifications that focus on practical application, like the AI Certification for Claude, to build your own expertise.
Part of a Global Shift
Iceland's pilot is part of a larger movement of governments and institutions integrating AI into public services. The European Parliament Archives Unit uses Claude to make millions of documents accessible, cutting search times by 80%.
In the UK, a partnership is in place to see how AI can improve public services for citizens. The London School of Economics has also given all its students access to Claude to help with problem-solving and critical thinking.
This initiative in Iceland provides another clear model for how countries can thoughtfully bring AI into education, focusing directly on the professionals on the front lines.
