IDF deploys AI systems for drone detection and civilian warnings in Iran operations

The Israeli military has integrated artificial intelligence into active combat operations against Iran, using AI to detect hostile drones, plan missions, and issue targeted civilian alerts, a senior military official said Monday.

The IDF established a dedicated AI division in December following lessons learned from earlier direct confrontations with Iran. The division consolidated existing units and technical capabilities to coordinate AI deployment across the Air Force and Home Front Command.

Three operational systems in use

Rom is an AI platform that connects to radar and sensor networks to identify and track hostile drones. When the system detects an aircraft, it sends real-time alerts to field units and transmits data to the Air Force for faster threat response.

A second system assists Air Force pilots with mission planning and navigation by analyzing operational requirements and route optimization.

National Message uses AI to identify missile launches and track interception debris. The system predicts where fragments may land, allowing authorities to issue precise public warnings to specific areas rather than broad alerts.

Human decision-making remains central

The IDF does not allow AI systems to make autonomous decisions in life-or-death situations, the official said. Instead, the systems improve accuracy, reduce processing time, and support human judgment.

AI tools coordinate hundreds of simultaneous operations - work that previously required large planning teams. The official said managing current operations without these systems would be difficult given the volume of attacks and number of defensive zones involved.

Documented impact

In at least two cases, AI-generated alerts provided real-time warnings to specific units, preventing damage and potentially saving lives, according to the official.

The division also supplies systems used in ongoing operations against Hezbollah in Lebanon and works with research bodies to model potential scenarios at intelligence and operational levels.

Sourcing and development

The IDF develops these systems in collaboration with defense contractors, local startups, and major technology companies. The military adapts existing technologies to operational needs rather than building systems from scratch.
