If AI stocks go silly big, Bitcoin could be next, says Lyn Alden

If AI winners finally look too pricey, money may rotate into Bitcoin. Even small demand can jolt BTC, though the path likely grinds, not a clean V-bottom.

AI Froth Could Be Bitcoin's Next Bull Trigger

Bitcoin's next leg up may not come from crypto-native catalysts. It could come from AI stocks getting "silly big," as macroeconomist Lyn Alden put it, and forcing a rotation of capital into assets with more perceived upside.

When a dominant theme stretches valuations, capital hunts for better asymmetry. With Bitcoin (BTC) still down roughly 46% from its reported October all-time high of $126,100, it's a live candidate for that rotation.

Why a Rotation From AI to BTC Makes Sense

"It could be that the AI stocks eventually just peak, they get so silly big that they can't get realistically much higher," Alden said. That's the setup where incremental dollars look elsewhere.

Bitcoin only needs a small bid to move. "It only takes a marginal amount of new demand to come in," Alden added, noting that long-term holders tend to "put the floor in" as short-term traders exit.

Translation for portfolio managers: if AI multiples overshoot and stall, even a modest reallocation into BTC can change the tape.

Nvidia: The Bar Keeps Rising

Some analysts are questioning whether the largest AI names can keep outpacing expectations into 2026. Nvidia (NVDA) has been called "probably the most important company and most important stock in America." The stock is up 35.48% over the last 12 months, according to Google Finance.

The core question: even if Nvidia books "another great quarter," will it be "good enough" to drive the stock higher from already-elevated levels? If not, leadership fatigue in AI could free up capital.

Bitcoin Is Competing for Capital-And That's New

Investor attention is finite. As one Bitcoin developer put it, Bitcoin is now "competing for capital" with AI for the first time at this scale. That matters for flows, liquidity, and how fast narratives rotate.

Price Action: Expect Grind, Not a V-Bottom

At the time of publication, Bitcoin is trading at $67,849, down 24.49% over the past 30 days, per CoinMarketCap. Alden doesn't expect a sharp reversal. "Bitcoin rarely makes V-shape bottoms outside COVID stimulus-type events."

Her base case: a grind. Sideways-to-lower price action is possible-"$10,000 lower or $20,000 lower"-before any sustained move higher. Meanwhile, coins tend to shift "from fast money hands to strongly held hands."

What Finance Teams Should Watch

  • AI leadership breadth: If AI gains narrow to a few names while breadth weakens, rotation risk rises.
  • Earnings vs. expectations: For mega-cap AI names, "great" may not clear the bar; watch guide quality and inventory signals.
  • BTC holder behavior: Rising long-term holder supply and falling exchange balances can amplify small demand shocks.
  • Funding and basis: Elevated perp funding or futures basis without spot follow-through can signal fragile rallies.
  • Liquidity windows: Monitor macro liquidity and buyback cycles-key for timing any cross-asset rotation.

Portfolio Implications

  • Size for asymmetry: If you buy the rotation thesis, even a small BTC sleeve can have outsized payoff if AI multiples stall.
  • Respect the grind: Stagger entries and use time-based accumulation; avoid anchoring to a V-bottom scenario.
  • Define exit triggers: Pre-set rules tied to funding, realized volatility, or a re-acceleration in AI earnings momentum.
  • Cross-hedge thoughtfully: Consider how BTC behaves across macro shocks versus AI beta in your broader book.

Bottom line: If AI leaders hit an expectations ceiling, Bitcoin is set up to be a prime destination for marginal capital. Don't wait for a perfect bottom-the rotation, if it comes, will look obvious only in hindsight.
