IIT Indore Introduces Innovative BTech Programmes in AI Healthcare and Environmental Economics

The Indian Institute of Technology, Indore (IIT-I), has launched two new BTech programmes that address pressing challenges in healthcare and sustainability. These unique courses focus on artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare and medical device innovations, as well as environmental economics and sustainable engineering. The programmes are part of two new academic schools created in partnership with the Bhupat and Jyoti Mehta Family Foundation (MFF).

School of Biosciences and Biomedical Engineering: AI Meets Healthcare

In collaboration with MFF, IIT Indore established the School of Biosciences and Biomedical Engineering. This school emphasizes AI applications in healthcare, bioinformatics, drug discovery, molecular biology, bio-manufacturing, and wearable health technologies. It aims to develop data-driven solutions targeting endemic diseases such as chikungunya and dengue and to tackle the challenge of antimicrobial resistance.

An important aspect of this initiative is the upcoming bio-manufacturing hub. This industry-focused facility will support the technical scale-up of enzyme, smart protein, and active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) manufacturing within India, helping ensure timely and affordable access to vaccines, diagnostics, and therapeutics.

School of Sustainability: Focus on Environment and Energy

The School of Sustainability will concentrate on areas including energy systems, battery technology, environmental economics, environmental law, water management, and climate studies. It plans to establish three Centres of Excellence dedicated to research that informs policy and practical solutions.

Over the next decade, IIT Indore aims to train more than 1,500 sustainability professionals through undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes.

Leadership Perspectives

IIT Indore director Dr. Suhas Joshi highlighted the broader impact of this collaboration, stating, "This partnership with the Mehta Family Foundation represents a new chapter in IIT Indore's growth. It demonstrates how academic rigor, global collaboration, and social purpose can come together to solve real-world problems."

Rahul Mehta, founder of MFF, expressed confidence in IIT Indore’s potential: "India needs institutions that can generate intellectual capital to lead sustainable development and healthcare reform. IIT Indore, with its talent and strategic location, is well-positioned to become a center of interdisciplinary excellence."

Why This Matters for Healthcare Professionals

  • These programmes provide future healthcare professionals with expertise in AI-driven medical innovations and bio-manufacturing, crucial for modern healthcare delivery.
  • They promote indigenous capabilities in producing essential healthcare materials, reducing dependency on imports and improving access.
  • Understanding environmental economics and sustainability supports the development of health policies that consider climate and ecological impacts.
