Illinois State and South Korean University Partner on AI Education
Illinois State University and Chungnam National University in South Korea have formed a partnership focused on AI for Education and teaching students responsible use of the technology.
Leaders from Chungnam visited Illinois State this week for the first time. The collaboration emerged from a two-year discussion process, sparked by a former Illinois State faculty member now working with Chungnam's president.
Both universities want to expand their AI programs. The agreement covers how to teach students responsible AI practices, whether through classroom applications or examining how students already use the tools.
"Faculty teach our students to use AI responsibly, so we want to work with our partner institutions to understand where their interests lie-whether that's exploring AI in the classroom or looking at how students are using AI," said Dr. Roopa Rawjee, executive director of international engagement at Illinois State University.
The agreement marks an initial step. Rawjee said both schools expect further discussions as they develop specific programs together.
For educators, the partnership signals a broader trend: universities are moving beyond adding AI tools to classrooms and toward structured programs that teach students how to use these systems responsibly. This approach treats AI literacy as a core competency rather than an optional skill.
