India's new AI Governance Guidelines set a clear direction: enable responsible AI while keeping room for bold product work. The approach is sector-first, not a single blanket AI law. - Sustainability checks: Track energy use per training run and per 1K inferences. Set compute budgets. Prefer scheduled training, spot capacity, and greener regions when feasible.
- Security and privacy: PII minimization, synthetic data where valid, secrets management for prompts/weights, and strict access controls around model endpoints.
Sustainability is the constraint
Compute is growing faster than power. Large transformer models eat energy, and new power capacity doesn't appear overnight. The guidance points to long-term planning, and the near-term fix is simple: pick the smallest model that solves the problem with acceptable risk. Use classical ML where it wins. Keep GenAI for use cases that need it.
Global context: between EU rules and US self-regulation
The guidelines avoid a heavy one-law approach like the EU, and also avoid pure self-regulation like the US.
