Indonesia Advances AI Industry Through Strategic Ministry Collaboration
Indonesia is positioning itself for significant growth in artificial intelligence (AI) by fostering cooperation between two key government bodies: the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs and the Ministry of Industry. Their joint efforts support the national objective of achieving 8 percent economic growth by accelerating digital transformation and integrating AI technologies within the industrial sector.
Building AI Infrastructure with a Focus on Semiconductors
Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Nezar Patria highlighted that the collaboration aims to establish a solid foundation for the AI ecosystem. Speaking at an AI industry development event in Batam, Riau Islands, he stressed the importance of covering the AI value chain comprehensively—from upstream components like semiconductors to downstream applications.
“Semiconductors are essential to AI development. We must prioritize this,” Patria said, pointing to Batam as a key hub for semiconductor industry growth supported by both ministries.
Developing Digital Talent and a Clear AI Roadmap
To support this industrial push, the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs is advancing digital skills programs in partnership with industry players. Their target is ambitious: to cultivate 12 million digital talents by 2030.
Deputy Minister of Industry Faisol Riza emphasized the necessity of a well-defined AI development roadmap. Coordinating with academic institutions and industry stakeholders, this roadmap will guide Indonesia’s AI strategy moving forward.
- Focus on semiconductor industry expansion in Batam as a foundation for AI hardware needs
- Implementation of digital skills programs to build a workforce capable of supporting AI growth
- Creation of a comprehensive AI development roadmap involving multiple stakeholders
These initiatives align with Indonesia’s broader digitalization efforts, including the recent launch of the AI Center of Excellence to boost innovation and adoption.
