Indonesia and UK Launch Joint AI Policy Dialogue Report

Jakarta – The governments of Indonesia and the United Kingdom have introduced the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy Dialogue Country Report, marking a collaborative effort to analyze AI adoption and guide policy development.

Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs of Indonesia, Nezar Patria, highlighted that this report is a result of a bilateral agreement on digital transformation between the two nations. The Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs intends to use the report’s findings as a foundation to craft practical AI policy recommendations that support national priorities.

Key Stakeholder Collaboration

The report consolidates insights from comprehensive sessions with various stakeholders including industry experts, academics, government officials, and community representatives. It identifies fundamental needs, challenges, and the consequences of AI use across six critical domains:

  • Digital services
  • Digital infrastructure
  • Data management
  • Digital talent
  • Digital ecosystems
  • Ethics and inclusivity

The dialogue also emphasized enhancing the Indonesian government’s role in connecting relevant parties and steering AI development and application nationally.

Next Steps for AI Governance

The initiative supports drafting Indonesia’s National Road Map for AI and a presidential regulation to govern AI technology use. The initial draft regulation is expected by the end of this month, with a public consultation scheduled for August. Following this, it will undergo review by the Law Ministry and State Secretariat in September.

Additionally, the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs is preparing related legal frameworks to ensure AI is used safely while promoting innovation.

For professionals involved in government, IT development, and legal fields, understanding these policy developments is crucial. They provide a structured approach to AI governance that balances innovation with ethical and inclusive practices.
